THE DIOCESE OF EGYPT WITH NORTH AFRICA AND THE HORN OF AFRICA

Countries: Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti

DIOCESE PROFILE:

Primate: The Most Revd. Dr Mouneer Hanna Anis

Provincial Secretary: The Revd. Hanna Mansour

Provincial Treasurer: The Revd. Canon William Schwartz

The Christian Church in Egypt and the Episcopal Church has grown up as a result of missionary work and Chaplaincies established during the time of British political influence. The old Cathedral in Cairo was demolished in 1978 to make way for new road works. It was replaced by a modern building which is now a centre for worship and work among a lively fellowship of Christians, many of them refugees from their own lands.

The work in hospitals, clinics, the Joint Relief Ministry for those displaced by economic and political upheaval, the Boulac Social Centre which ministers to the poor in Egypt and the Deaf Unit places great demand on the resources of so small a community, and support is needed for rehabilitation projects in Egypt and the care of orphans in Ethiopia.

A particular challenge is presented by the opportunities among young people in Egypt and ecumenical co-operation with the older Churches of other traditions is an important facet of life in the Diocese.

Within the borders of the Diocese there are also Anglican Chaplaincies in All Saints Cathedral, Cairo, Alexandria, Tunis, Algiers (currently without a full-time chaplain due to political upheaval), Libya, Ethiopia (Addis Ababa) and Eritrea (Asmara) where expatriate Christians are welcomed to worship. Arabic speaking services take place also at All Saints’ Cathedral in Cairo, St. Michael and All Angels, Heliopolis, The Good Shepherd, Giza, Jesus Light of the World, Old Cairo and St. Mark’s, Menouf. The Chaplaincy of Port Said is currently not occupied by a permanent chaplain but services are held on Friday mornings by a rota of clergy.
